.NET Rocks Visual Studio 2010 Road Trip: Ride Along

Imagine spending one month driving around the United States talking to user groups. Carl and Richard from the .NET Rocks radio show (http://www.dotnetrocks.com) justTheBoat2010 finished doing just that. I was lucky enough to accompany them on the Dallas to Tulsa leg of the trip and boy what a journey it was. I caught up with the RV aka the “DotNetMobile”  as they were pulling out of Dallas bright and early on Thursday morning. Walking onto the RV was like stepping back in time to my college dorm room; a trash bag filled with empty bottles and cans, and the distinctive smell of let’s say funk. As the RV rolled out of the parking lot and we settled in for the 5 hour drive to Tulsa, I got a small taste of what the guys have been doing for the past few weeks. The ride was bumpy and noisy, but they guys took it all in stride. Thanks to my mobile wi-fi card I was able to get some work done while bouncing down the road, however when Carl pulled out the guitar to do some practicing, I got got a live show with my morning email. Getting lost wasn’t an option because the driver had GPS, but more interesting was the fact that the RV sent its location up to a bing map. So there was no more asking “are we there yet” just pop open your laptop and visit the online tracking tool. The funny part was when everyone had it open at the same time when we were planning on where to stop for lunch.

We rolled into the venue around 5 PM to a great welcome by the local INTEA user group. Sean Whitesell (http://www.tulsadevelopers.net) and his team found a great venue, secured sponsors to provide all the attendees a yummy dinner and spent months getting the word out to everyone in town. At each of their stops the DNR team kicked off the event by recording an interview for.NET Rocks live. This time was no different, as they started with an interview with Tim Huckaby. The event continued with Richard giving a talk on load testing using his suitcase of computers, then Carl gave a talk about Multimedia in Silverlight. The event concluded with a rousing game of the “64-bit question”.
