Microsoft Key Binding Charts for VS 2010

Remember the old Word Perfect days, when we had that paper glued to our keyboard telling us what the function keys did. Well with VS 2010 there are lots of great shortcuts. Zain our local DE has a good blog series on these tips (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/zainnab/), but it is helpful to have a list. Enter the Key Binding charts. You might have been lucky enough to get one from the languages team, but if not, you can print one out (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/lisa/archive/2010/04/16/vs-2010-keyboard-shortcut-posters-now-available-for-vb-c-f-c.aspx).   My only question is should we read something into the pictures? F# a young attractive woman,...

Free Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware & Anti-Malware suite from Microsoft: Microsoft Security Essentials

In the past I have blogged about VIPRE from Sunbelt Software (http://www.drowningintechnicaldebt.com/ShawnWeisfeld/archive/0001/01/01/vipre-from-sunbelt-software.aspx) and Windows Live OneCare (http://www.drowningintechnicaldebt.com/ShawnWeisfeld/archive/0001/01/01/windows-live-onecare.aspx). I still like VIPRE as it is the most cost effective solution I have found to protect servers (at the time of this writing they are charging $50 for a site license for there product, I have been hard pressed to find anti-virus that will run on Server 2003/Server 2008 for that price). On the other hand in Microsoft infinite wisdom they decided to discontinue OneCare, I really liked that product, as it made it dirt simple for the home user to not...

VIPRE from Sunbelt Software

UPDATED, yet again: While I was at Tech Ed I was eating breakfast with a salesman from Sunbelt. Yea I know what you are thinking another salesman, but this guy wasn’t pushy, actually I did not even get his name, but long story short he told me about their product, VIPRE. There are a couple of cool things about there product. 1) it is supposed to be very fast, that is good in an antivirus. 2) it works on Server OS’s (like win 2k3 and win 2k8), and 3) they have an unlimited site license for home users. Since I run...

ASP.NET charting controls

Microsoft released a set of controls called the ASP.NET charting controls. I don’t know if they licensed this from Dundas, however in one of my projects I was able to replace Dundas with this in about 30 min. Most of the class names are the same. Oh and they are FREE!!!!! The only caveat is that you have to be using .NET 3.5. http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/11/24/new-asp-net-charting-control-lt-asp-chart-runat-quot-server-quot-gt.aspx

Virtual CloneDrive

If you have an MSDN license you are flush with lots of ISO files. Maybe you want to burn them all to DVD's but I keep my collection of ISO's on my Windows Home Server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Home_Server). This saves me alot of time hunting through the pile of junk on my desk looking for a disc. However it does mean that I need software to mount the ISO. This software adds a virtual DVD drive to your computer allowing you to insert the ISO. The beauty is that it appears just like a normal DVD once mounted. . . The best...

Office 2007 Ultimate for Students only $60

Hey if you are a student and have not upgraded then now is your chance. One of my students found this website and I thought I would share. Go to http://www.theultimatesteal.com/product.asp and you can get Office 2007 Ultimate for only $60. The catch is that it is a download (you can get a CD for extra) and you must register with a .edu email address. Check it out! BTW: if you are hesitant about upgrading you can also get a plugin for older office to read the new file formats. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

Fiddler Web Debugging Proxy

Went to an MSDN event by Russ (http://blogs.msdn.com/rfustino/) a few weeks ago and during his demo he displayed this cool tool called Fiddler (http://www.fiddler2.com/).  A must have debugging tool for any Smart Client or Web Developer. Fiddler is a Web Debugging Proxy which logs all HTTP(S) traffic between your computer and the Internet. Fiddler allows you to inspect all HTTP(S) traffic, set breakpoints, and "fiddle" with incoming or outgoing data. Fiddler includes a powerful event-based scripting subsystem, and can be extended using any .NET language.Fiddler is freeware and can debug traffic from virtually any application, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera,...
